Researching a topic for your niche blog

Researching a topic for your niche blog begins with just writing down about 10 topics of interest.  You have to just start thinking outside of the box as they say and really look at things differently.

Take a look at what people are searching for on Google Trends.

It is a really interesting look at the world we live in.  Who knew so many people searched for the weirdest things.

Then start playing with this Searchit! tool using the Brainstorm option in step one.  Use the Google Keyword Tool and the other search tools to just start getting some ideas of what is going on online and what people are looking for.

You can also use dmoz.org to just search through categories to see how many sites are listed in the different categories.  Dmoz.org used to be a major influence online but in the past few years became really outdated but it still a good place to research a topic for your niche blog.

The other good place to look is ezinearticles.com.  It is an article directory that article marketers use to write articles to promote their websites.  (I’ll write more on this later) but just start clicking through the categories and see what people are promoting.

Got some ideas?

Here are some of mine!

  • popping popcorn/popcorn recipes
  • how to give a massage
  • reflexology
  • how to sell your photos online
  • wordpress niche blogging
  • a site about the town you live in (mine is www.redmond-washington-guide.com)
  • a local continuing massage education calendar
  • using the law of attraction in life
  • backyard bird feeders
  • self help books
  • self help books for women/men
  • hummingbirds
  • how to grow the best tomatoes
  • cure fibromyalgia
  • healing back/neck pain
  • antique tractors
  • bike tours
  • hiking trials
  • best lunch/breakfast spots
  • how to buy a foreclosure

Got the idea yet?

How do you tell if it is a good niche or not?  It has to be large enough that it will have a fair amount of people searching for it but not too large that it will be impossible to get the site found.  All of those keyword tools will tell you numbers but the thing is we really don’t know if they are right or not.  The best tool is your own brain and instincts.

The thing is to just start with something and test it and learn as you go.  Your first niche may or may not be profitable.  The idea is to create about 30 or more niches anyways so that you can have multiple streams of income so that if one fails it won’t impact your income but if they all succeed -well you will be on the beach creating your next blog from your laptop sipping little drinks with umbrellas.

The best webhost to host your niche blogs is hostgator.com which is where I host this blog.  Blue host is also very good.  Both of these companies will let you install multiple blogs for one monthly fee of under $10 a month.  You can’t really go wrong with that.  As you get more successful I would create a few different accounts in case a site goes down but by then you will have enough income saved up that it won’t matter.
